MUSKEGON, MI (WHTC) – An Ottawa County Corrections deputy was caught drunk driving early Friday morning and the Muskegon County Jail is being investigated for releasing the deputy before his blood alcohol dropped below the legal limit.
MLive.com reports a Muskegon police officer arrested Deputy Dennis Robert Smith after he was caught driving in Muskegon with a high blood alcohol content (BAC). In Michigan, you cannot drive a car or operate machinery with a BAC of .08 or above and a high BAC is considered 0.17 or higher.
Records state that Smith was booked at Muskegon County Jail at 2:55 a.m. and was released an hour and a half later on $1,000 personal recognizance bond. He was then driven home by another deputy.
Muskegon County Sheriff Dean Roesler confirmed that several policies were violated in Smith’s release. An internal review of the situation at Muskegon County Jail is underway to see where the problem started. Deputy Smith has not been suspended for his actions.
