LANSING, MI (WHTC) – A consumer alert is out from Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette on tips for people to avoid IRS scams and tax-related identify theft. Consumer Protection Division director and Assistant Attorney General Kathryn Baron says the best way to not become a victim is to file your taxes as soon as possible and to do it electronicially.
The top scams this year include high-pressure phone calls that threaten legal action if you don’t pay back taxes immediately; phone calls to seniors promising a big rebate for filing early; and emails that say you’re getting a big refund or are being audited.
