IRELAND (WHTC) – “Luck of the Irish” is used around the world on a daily basis to wish people good luck during a toast, on greeting cards and text messages just to name a few. The phrase originated in the U.S. and was used by the people of America to describe the Irish emigrants who found their “Pot of Gold” in the gold and silver mines.
Some people feel that the Irish are not lucky at all. Irish people have had to fight prejudice all over the world but they do have an amazing sense of humor and pride for their country.
Originating from the 1800s, the “Luck of the Irish” referred to their bad luck, having throughout their history suffered famines and invasions that took millions of lives. When the Irish began emigrating on mass to the United States, Canada, Australia and Great Britain, to escape the Emerald Isle the phrase “can you believe the luck of the Irish” was frequently used.
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide.
