UNDATED (WHTC) – After what has been a relatively quiet two-plus weeks, wintry weather returned to some extent along the Lakeshore this morning. An advisory for ice is in effect until 4 PM, as forecasters believe that a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that would be up to an inch in total will slicken up roads.
Such was the case overnight, as two 28-year-old motorists shared the same fate in similar type of accidents four miles and 30 minutes apart south of Grand Haven overnight. Matthew Archer of Norton Shores was northbound on West Olive Road approaching Buchanan Street around 2:30 AM, while Tiffany Pelp of Grand Haven was southbound on US-31 approaching Ferris Street around 3 AM. Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Christie Wendt said that both drivers lost control of their vehicles on black ice conditions, skidded to the left and rolled over in the median. Both drivers were buckled up, and they were both taken to North Ottawa Community Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Both crashes remain under investigation.
Weather and road conditions compelled administrators in all public and private K-12 schools to cancel classes today.
Outside of a cold and snowy November, as well as the first full week of January, it has been a balmy winter season thus far in the Holland/Zeeland area, with about six more weeks remaining.
