ZEELAND, MI (WHTC) – After years of debate, the Zeeland City Council, on a 6-1 vote, gave the go-ahead to staffers for developing a new cemetery just west of the city limits. The city has owned a 27-acre parcel of land on Felch Street, between 100th and 104th avenues, in Holland Township since 1958, but council members have debated back and forth whether it’s appropriate for the city to build a cemetery in another jurisdiction. The city’s Parks and Cemeteries Commission and city staff will put together plans to develop a new cemetery in phases, with no firm timetable immediately set. City officials say the present 15-acre cemetery on Lincoln Avenue is expected to sell out its remaining plots within six years.
