Michigan has once again been eliminated from the "Race To The Top" competition for federal education grant money. Educational reforms had passed the Legislature and were signed into law by the Governor earlier this year, in part to make Michigan more attractive for this program. Now that this state has swung and missed twice in this competition, does it mean that the reforms should now be rescinded, or that the reforms weren’t a good idea? State Senator Wayne Kuipers of Holland, chair of the Senate Education Committee, talked with News Director Gary Stevens about that.
Roughly 840 thousand gallons of oil from a pipeline which sprung a leak this week near Marshall has been found in Kalamazoo County. Could the spill reach the Lakeshore? Allegan County officials say that the oil spill is not expected to get all the way downstream to the mouth of the river near Saugatuck. Measures are being taken to stop the oil at a cosmetic dam and retention pond at Otsego, or at the Consumers Energy hydroelectric dam on Lake Allegan. Still, concerns are there, according to Republican State Representative Bob Genetski of Saugatuck, who talked about the matter with WHTC News Director Gary Stevens.
