HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Hope College’s annual Cesar Chavez Lecture is tonight, featuring Michigan State University Professor Samuel Saldívar.
He’ll talk about Chavez’s influences, as well as that of other United Farm Workers, such as Dolores Huerta, on the farm community.
Chavez was a first-generation American, born near Yuma, AZ, on on March 31, 1927. He grew up as a farm worker and devoted his life to improving worker safety and pay. Chavez’s rallying cry, “Si, si puede” — “Yes, it is possible” or “Yes, you can.” — is famous.
Doors open at 6 p.m. at the Bultman Student Center Auditorium for this free lecture, which is a joint effort by Hope’s Center for Diversity and Inclusion, the Latino Student Organization and the campus-wide GROW (Growing Relationships through diverse Opportunities to strengthen involvement in an ever-changing World) initiative.
