HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) — Holland-based political consultant Shannon Garrett says more women and people from minority groups are running for — and winning — political offices thanks to term limits.
In the Michigan’s senate races, she says an historic number of Latinas are running: Two.
One, Republican Daniela Garcia, is from Ottawa County, and the other, Democrat Poppy Sias-Hernandez is from Muskegon County.
Garrett says based on her research, there’s never been a Latina in the state senate. While one is good, two is better, she said, for at least one reason:
“Our state legislature should reflect what our state population looks like,” Garrett said.
July 9 is the last day to register to vote in the Aug. 7 primary.
