POLKTON TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A joyride for three Muskegon teens in a stolen car yesterday morning ended up with one of them in custody and two having to answer for their actions with their parents.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Brian Buter, OnStar contacted Central Dispatch just before 8 AM, saying that a grey 2016 GMC Yukon Denali had been stolen. About a minute later, a deputy spotted a vehicle that matched the description on westbound I-96 near Marne, and a police chase ensued.
It ended when the SUV drove off of the highway near the 14 mile marker between Coopersville and Nunica and got stuck in the snow, but Buter said that the pursuit didn’t end there. “Almost immediately, the driver fled on foot and was pursued by members of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police,” the Sergeant explained. “The suspect ran south of I-96 to an area near Arthur Street and 88th (Avenue), and then turned back north across the interstate. He was later taken into custody near the 8200 block of Cleveland Street after being chased by an Ottawa County K-9 Unit and several members of several police agencies.”
The 16-year-old suspect is in the Ottawa County Youth Home awaiting arraignment on juvenile charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing and eluding and resisting arrest. Two other 16-year-olds in the SUV were released to their parents, while the vehicle was returned to its owner, described only as an elderly woman from the Muskegon Heights area.
The case remains under investigation.
