OTTAWA COUNTY (WHTC-AM/FM) — The investigation is not yet complete, but Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker is telling WHTC that the death of 33-year-old William VanEyck of Holland in the jail in March was likely a suicide.
Kempker said he cannot reveal all the details of the case, but said that VanEyck did receive mental health services and in the “best judgement of the mental health professionals” working with VanEyck was that he was not considered actively suicidal at the time of the incident.
A March 26 sentencing date has been set for VanEyck, who’d pleaded no contest to charges of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer; third-degree fleeing a police officer; and malicious destruction of property between $1,000 but less than $20,000.
