GEORGETOWN TWP, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A 70-year-old Georgetown Township man remains hospitalized at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital after a severe beating in his Jenison home.
Captain Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says around 6:00 a.m. Monday, October 9, 34-year-old Bret Joseph Bardwell of Wyoming entered his father’s home located in the 8300 block of Thornwood Avenue with intent to commit murder.
Authorities say Bardwell found his father asleep and used an undisclosed “blunt object” to attack him. The father whose name has not been released, suffered head and facial fractures, a broken hand and other scrapes. After Bardwell left the home his father then sought help from a nearby neighbor.
On Monday evening, Bardwell was tracked to his Wyoming home and taken into custody. On Wednesday, October 11, Bardwell was arraigned charged with assault with intent to commit murder and first-degree home invasion.
The motive for the attack is still under investigation, but seems to extend from an ongoing family dispute. Bardwell is being held at the Ottawa County jail without bond.
