MUSKEGON, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – What has been an eyesore along Lakeshore Drive in Muskegon has finally come down.
The second of the two smokestacks at the old Sappi Fine Paper Mill in Muskegon fell to the ground just after 9:00 a.m. Sunday, October 1. The paper mill had sat empty for decades in hopes that it would be turned into a commercial property that would bring back life to the area.
Hundred’s turn out to see the smokestack fall along Lakeshore Drive whole other’s got a bird’s eye view from their boats in Muskegon Lake. Most were happy to see it finally go, but others were reminded of what used to be. A paper mill plant that was home to many when it was in it’s heyday.
Many reflected on how their lives changed forever when the paper mill shut down for good in 2009.
Robin Wright who now lives in Louisiana told Mary Ellen Murphy in a Facebook post that her family had to move out of state after her husband lost his job. Amy Combs of Fruitport reflected on having 25 years at the mill.
“My Father had almost 40 years there when he retired. It created a great living for our families.”
The site is being redeveloped into “Windward Point” which will house condos, a marina, shops and restaurants.
