HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A two-vehicle crash on Holland’s North Side landed both drivers onto hospital beds on opposite sides of Ottawa County.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Brian Buter, he and and other first responders were called to the intersection of US-31 at Ransom Street around 10:30 on Friday morning. Investigators believe that James Pilafas, who was driving his car eastbound on Ransom Street, apparently failed to yield to traffic while attempting to cross US-31 and broadsided the northbound sports car of Jason Fitzgerald, causing it to veer right and into a nearby ditch.
Rescue crews had to extricate the 34-year-old Fitzgerald of Grand Haven from his vehicle and took him to North Ottawa Community Hospital in his hometown, while the 70-year-old Pilafas of Holland was taken to his hometown Holland Hospital. Both men were initially listed in stable condition.
Buter added that it took about 45 minutes to clear the wreckage and that Pilafas was ticketed for failing to yield the right of way as the crash remains under investigation.
