ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC) – A 27-year-old St. Joseph man remains held without bond in the Allegan County Jail after a Wednesday morning incident north of South Haven in which his stepfather was gunned down.
Tyler Smith was arraigned on open murder and felony firearms charges on Thursday in Allegan District Court. He surrendered without incident shortly after state police troopers arrived at a Blue Star Highway residence near Glenn around 7 AM. Authorites were called after 58-year-old Robert Mark Hill was mortally wounded by a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Hill was the co-owner of the Farmhouse Glenn Antiques store located on the property. According to court documents, Smith walked into the house and into the bedroom where he allegedly fired one round, emptied the 40-caliber handgun, and then walked into the backyard where he was subsequently arrested. Hill’s wife, who was in the house at the time, was not harmed. There was no indication disclosed thus far as to a motive behind the shooting.
A preliminary hearing is slated for sometime next month.
