HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – The Holland Area Arts Council celebrated local art appreciation at their opening reception for the 2017 Holland Friends of Art Spring Member Show on Thursday.
Fifty-two HFA members submitted 90 pieces of artwork to be judged by juror LeeAnne Frame. Out of the all the artwork, 43 submissions were chosen to be displayed in the Lievense gallery. A wide variety of media are represented including acrylic, oil and watercolor paintings, fiber sculptures, photographs and ceramics. The exhibition will run through June 3.
During, the reception on Thursday, three top winners and four honorable mentions were presented with awards for their artwork. First place was awarded to Martin Kiernan’s Windmill Morning, a photograph. Second place went to James McMillan for his watercolor painting titled Windmill Island Canal. Dian Taylor was awarded third place for her watercolor, Nod to M. Avery and P. Bonnard. Honorable mentions included Betsy Buurma Morton, Susie Osier, Cindy Bender, and Gina Johnson.
Every year, the Holland Friends of Art also donates artwork from the exhibit to a nonprofit as a Purchase Award. The non-profit that was chosen this year was the Center for Women in Transition. A representative from CWIT selected Honorable Mention Gina Johnson’s watercolor Interrupted Drowning.
