HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Following recent deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning during last week’s widespread power outages, the Michigan State Police is urging the public to take steps to protect themselves from this silent killer.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless and tasteless gas produced when fossil fuels, gasoline, natural gas and oil are burned. In only minutes, deadly fumes can develop in enclosed spaces.
Early symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, confusion, fatigue, and nausea. If inhalation continues, the gas can cause unconciousness, brain damage, and even death. If you suspect a poisoning, move to a place with fresh air and call 9-1-1.
Some ways to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning are never using gas or charcoal burning devices inside of homes or garages, not using an oven or cooktop to heat your home, and not letting a vehicle run in a garage.
