SPRING LAKE, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Some leaders in Village of Spring Lake are hoping to make the village one with Spring Lake Township.
At a packed villiage meeting Monday night, the topic of disincorporation was up for debate. Supporters of the idea say it would be a good move because it would lower taxes, while opponents say they do not mind paying more taxes for special services like snow removal and leaf pick-up.
Village President Joyce Verplank-Hatton supports the idea. She ran on the platform to make the change.
“We have a most unique and unusual situation where all of the incorporated Villages pay double taxes.
Study group leader Tony Verplank says they’ve come to the conclusion that rejecting the proposal to disincorporate the village of Spring Lake is in everyone’s best interest.
“I would encourage everybody to do whatever they can to understand what they are voting for and not just vote on the status quo or reduction of taxes.”
The village would be the first to disincorporate in the state. A yes vote in August would put the issue on the ballot in November to dissolve the village.
Another informational meeting about disincorporation will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, June 20, at the Spring Lake District Library.
