HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – Many high school students think that the summer after graduation is meant for hanging out at the beach and sleeping in, but Holland Public schools want to make sure their prepared for college in the fall.
They have teamed up with Destination Education, a local college access network, to try to combat the lack of student motivation in those in-between months, referred to as “Summer Melt.”
Destination Education developed the Start Now program to guide students through the few short months before college. The program features four workshops that will help get students ready for the first year of college, as well as text message alerts as reminders for when they should have certain things done before the fall semester.
Katie Pennington, Principal of Holland High, is excited to be able to help out high school seniors on their road to college, even after graduation. “Once our graduates cross the stage and become citizens of the world, they still need a little bit of support to be successful as college freshman.” Pennington said.
