HOLLAND, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) A dog is man’s best friend and for a veteran a dog can also be a life saver.
K-9 Camo Companions connects Veterans with rescue dogs in West Michigan. They focus on veterans who may be suffering from PTSD, a traumatic brain injury or some other lasting effect from their time in the service.
Jessica Wilcom is President of the non-profit organization and says that every veteran is impacted differently from their time in the service.
“Some people have issues going out into public events. They can’t do it, but if they have their dog they are more comfortable. There are certain situations where it actually it is beneficial for them to get out and socialize more with other vets and their four-legged friends.
K-9 Camo Companions is based in Sparta, but helps veterans all over West Michigan. They introduce veterans to several dogs so that a connection can be made. Once that is made, training is available for the veteran and dog. There is no specific type of dog that connects with a veteran. K-9 Camo Companions has seen vets with a dog as small as a pomaranian and as large as a doberman.
The service is free. You can reach them at 616-970-0234 or by email.
