MUSKEGON, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – It was a heated town hall meeting in Muskegon with Zeeland Congressman Bill Huizenga as constituents who made it clear in the voting booth spoke their minds in the auditorium at Orchard View High School Wednesday evening.
Huizenga opened the town hall introducing 8-year-old Sawyer Hendrickson from Ludington who is the youngest recipient ever of the Individual Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award. Sawyer spoke about her “Scouts For Soldiers-Girl Scout Troop #4688” Sawyer and her troop earned over 870 community service hours in 2016 raising awareness by putting up barrels throughout downtown Ludington filled with toy soldiers inviting people to “take a toy soldier in honor of our heroes fighting for our freedom.”
About 250 people showed up to Orchard View High School to have their voices heard. Everything from health care, President Trump’s recent remarks in Arizona and racism were some of the heated topics. The city of Muskegon recently had several incidents of racist graffiti. Many wanted to know how he can support President Trump with the President’s recent remarks in Arizona this week.
“I have denounced various time all of those elements. I don’t believe that all Mexican’s are rapists. The examples that you have talked about I have spoken out. This is not the first time I have talked about this or addressed this issue.”
Huizenga has been critical of President Trump’s remarks several times on his weekly segment on WHTC News and on his Facebook page issuing statements.
The town hall lasted over an hour and a half with Huizenga staying afterwards to talk to constituents who didn’t have a chance to have their questions answered.
