ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC) -It’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Grand Valley State University held a town hall to discuss sexual assault on campus that was hampered by the actions of a now former student senator.
A controversial tweet written by student senate member Patrick Borum was the topic of discussion. In a tweet posted Monday, April 3, Borum tweeted “”rape culture isn’t real.” The tweet has been shared on social media including Facebook.
Borum has now resigned from the student senate and his Kappa Sigma fraternity brothers and the student senate are denouncing his actions.
The English Oxford Dictionary defines rape culture as a society in which the populous’ general attitude trivializes sexual abuse and assault. Borum has apologized for the post and said he is appalled by rape, but told FOX 17 that he still does not believe that western culture normalizes sexual abuse.
