ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC) – A town hall discussion on sexual assault and campus safety was held in the Kirkof Center on the campus of GVSU Thursday, September, 29.
Over 100 students, faculty and staff members attended the meeting in which President Thomas Haas opened saying he is devastated by the reports of sexual assaults near campus. Haas calls it a “cancer” on the campus. Grand Valley was once included on lists of the safest college campuses in the country.
The attacks began on August 27th, with the most recent being reported Tuesday night. No arrests have been made.
Captain Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is telling female students at GVSU to walk in pairs and be aware of their surroundings.
Those in attendance were encouraged to inform friends about educational programs offered by various organizations on campus including RaveGuardian and SafeWalk.
