HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – The US-31 reconstruction project on Holland’s North Side will apparently take a little bit longer to complete.
Leo Evans of the Muskegon office of the Michigan Department of Transportation, in an email to all interested stakeholders on Tuesday, said that “it would be realistic to expect that we will have the NB (northbound) roadway substantially completed and reopened to traffic sometime during the week of October 17th. Fingers crossed…”
The east Riley Street approach to US-31, currently closed, should be reopened by Friday, and Evans said that the last intersection reconstruction for the entire project – 8th Street at US-31 – will be closed next Monday (October 3rd) through Friday (October 7th). The following week, the last layer of asphalt will be placed on the new northbound roadway, with two-hour-long closures of the crossing streets in order to properly cool down the new surface, probably during the evening hours.
Evans added that, once the new northbound lanes are opened, the southbound roadway will be closed off to apply a final asphalt layer, with cosmetic touches being done into November.
The US-31 project began on the evening of May 15th, about 24 hours after the completion of the Tulip Time Festival, with M-DOT’s intention of renovating and widening the roadway from 8th to Ransom streets in Holland Township to accommodate increased traffic volumes.
