PARK TWP., MI (WHTC) – The search for a 17-year-old Holland man who apparently drowned in the waters of Lake Michigan last week continues.
Marine Unit members of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department were in the waters off of Holland State Park on Tuesday, three days after an extensive, multi-agency effort to find the body of Christopher Mimis was called off. He was one of four teens who went into the waters of Lake Michigan off of the North Pier last Wednesday evening despite red flags flying from Beach Hazard conditions at the time. Two of the four were able to reach the shore safely, while the body of 14-year-old Vincent Green was found under the rocks along the pier about 24 hours later, and Mimis’ body has yet to be recovered.
The recovery effort has been hampered by weather-related rough conditions, along with murky water coming into the area from Lake Macatawa that has restricted a visible search for the body. Family and friends reacted critically to last Saturday’s decision to end the underwater search, saying that not enough has been done to find Mimis.
