HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – The end of a long-running road reconstruction project along the Lakeshore is in sight.
According to Leo Evans in the Muskegon office of the Michigan Department of Transportation, contractors are planning to reopen the northbound lanes of US-31, from 8th to Ransom Streets in Holland Township, sometime late on Saturday or early on Sunday. It comes about two months after northbound traffic was diverted onto the southbound lanes in that stretch to accommodate a complete resurfacing and widening effort.
Evans said that crews will return to southbound US-31 in that area next week to complete top course paving, with work done at night and take between five and seven days to complete. There will be some narrowing of traffic to one lane, with indirect (or Michigan) lefts closed, barricading of ramps to Lakewood Boulevard and Chicago Drive for a couple of nights, and occasional one- to two-hour intersection blockages. Those lanes were first closed off on May 15th, just after the conclusion of the Tulip Time Festival.
Evans added that, after southbound paving is complete, there will be some final work done on shoulder gravel, signs, traffic signals and other needs through mid-November, but that traffic impact will be more limited in nature.
