HOLLAND TWP., MI (WHTC) – A 66-year-old Holland man survived being struck by a vehicle this morning, but he lost his companion dog.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant David VanderPloeg, James Stelter was walking westbound with his leashed dog on the non-motorized path along Quincy Street near 140th Avenue on Holland’s North Side around 8:45 AM while the compact car of Michelle Trejo was coming from the opposite direction. Trejo later told deputies that she lost control of her vehicle and couldn’t regain it in time, as it drifted left across the center line and struck both Stelter and the canine before rolling onto its side and coming to rest.
Stelter suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Holland Hospital for treatment, while the dog died at the scene. Trejo, a 43-year-old Holland woman, was unhurt but was ticketed for careless driving.
The incident remains under investigation.
