HOLLAND (WHTC) — It’s Cinco de Mayo — but before you start mixing that margarita, you should probably know Cinco de Mayo marks an 1862 battle between outnumbered Mexican soldiers and French invaders. Mexicans won that battle and the day’s been celebrated ever since. (Mexico’s Independence Day is Sept. 16.)
Here in Holland, Latin Americans United for Progress has for 50 years organized a Cinco de Mayo celebration leading into Tulip Time.
Renamed Fiesta this year, it starts Friday with the Brown Hornets performing Chicano rock at the Holland Civic Center, on Pine Avenue between Eighth and Ninth streets.
