HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – It has been a trying few weeks for the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division. They thank the community in West Michigan for their support and prayers.
Sgt. Cal Kuening spoke with WHTC News and says help and support from the other agencies in the recovery efforts of Riley Hoeksema helped them bring the teenager home to his parents. This past weekend the Marine Division and the Sheriff’s department were dispatched to a drowning in Spring Lake and it took over a half hour from the time of the incident before finding the man in a dozen feet of water.
Kuening says accidents happen but we need to respect the water. “When you’re out on the lake or any body of water, even though you may be the best swimmer out there, you still have to respect it. You have to take precautions. You have to have your life jackets on.”
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office hosted several boater safety classes this past Spring. Kuening says the best website for online classes and all things boating is boatingmag.com.
