ALLENDALE, MI (WHTC) – Consumers Energy celebrated its first solar power plant located at Grand Valley State University yesterday that will produce electricity for many Michigan homes and businesses.
Called the Solar Gardens, the 17-acre facility located on GVSU’s Allendale campus generates 3 megawatts of solar energy, or enough to power around 600 homes. It is currently the largest community solar project in Michigan.
Consumers Energy is also in the middle of building a second Solar Garden site to be located at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, which is set to open later this summer.
By opening these facilities as well as developing other energy projects in Michigan, Consumers Energy is exceeding state requirements to provide 10 percent of its electricity from renewable sources.
