HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – A bicyclist who was not wearing a helmet and ridiing against traffic was struck by a car Wednesday evening July 27 in Tallmadge Township.
Sgt. J. Douglas of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says Christopher Medendorp, 20, of Marne was riding his bicycle eastbound on Lake Michigan Drive against the flow of traffic just before 6 p.m. when he was struck.
Jeffrey Umlor, 44 of Allendale was stopped on Eighth Street in a 2015 GMC Terrain waiting to turn onto Lake Michigan Drive. The light turned green and Umlor turned westbound and struck Medendorf who had not stopped for traffic.
Medendorf was thrown from his bicycle, treated at the scene and then transported by Life EMS to Spectrum Butterworth where he is listed in stable condition.
Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
