CHESTER TWP, MI (WHTC) – The body of a 7-year-old boy was found Sunday evening, July 25, in Crockery Lake in Grose County Park located at 22200 24th Avenue in Chester Township.
According to Sgt. J. Douglas with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the boy, identified as Natanael Escobar of Grand Rapids, was playing in the marked swimming area with two other children ages 11 and eight. When the 11-year-old began struggling in the water, Natanael went to his aid.
Natanael was able to assist the the 11-year-old to safety before he slipped below the water and did not resurface.
An extensive rescue effort was launched by good samaritans at the scene before first responders arrived. Just over an hour after he was last seen, Natanael was located by divers in 12 feet of water inside of the marked swimming area. He was treated at the scene before being pronounced dead.
Their were several agencies who responded to the scene including The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Road Patrol, and Dive Team, Chester Township Fire Rescue, Wright-Tallmadge Fire Rescue and Rockford Ambulance.
The incident remains under investigation.
