HASTINGS (WKZO-AM) — Barry County Sheriff Dar Leaf says the couple sought for the beating of a 66-year-old Assyria Township woman have waived extradition in Winnebago County, Ill., and should be back in Michigan just as soon as they can arrange transportation.
Cory Wagner, 27, and Tiffany Chanthavong, 21, both of Holland, are the pair named by the Illinois sheriff who busted them.
Wagner was wanted for violating parole. Rather than go back to jail, he demanded his mother give him the cash to escape.
Police say when she refused, Wagner allegedly attacked her and left her duct taped to a chair. Police say he then stole her credit card and her car and took off with his girlfriend.
They got as far as Rockford, Ill., before he used the credit card to rent a motel room. By that time, his mother had managed to work her leg free and dial 911.
Police were watching for any use of the credit card. As soon as they got a hit, they notified Winnebago County authorities, who made the arrest.
Wagner and Chanthavong were being sought for assault with intent to murder and unlawful imprisonment, but may also face additional charges.
