HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – As many remember today as the anniversary of the 1978 Blizzard, here in West Michgan we are currently under a Winter Weather Advisory for Allegan and Ottawa County from 7 p.m. tonight to 7 a.m. Thursday, January 27.
The National Weather Service says snow will develop this evening and into overnight hours with 1-4 inches expected. Blowing snow is expected and visibility will decrease to less than a mile. WHTC will have any delays, closings and cancellations on air and at www.whtc.com
The Great Blizzard of 1978, also known as the White Hurricane, was a historic winter storm that struck the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes from Wednesday, January 25 through Friday, January 27, 1978.
Michigan Governor William Milliken declared a state of emergency and called out the Michigan National Guard, the Michigan State Police pronounced Traverse City, Michigan “unofficially closed” and warned area residents to stay home, and classes at the University of Michigan were canceled for the first time in its 140 year history.
