HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Snow is going to hit West Michigan this week and those who love snowmobiling will be out in full force.
Sgt. Cal Kuening with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office says snowmobile safety classes are a must for those who own one or even rent one during the Winter months. Three classes are available to choose from. Kuening says you’ll get your snowmobile certificate upon completion and you’ll be good to go.
Kuening says is you’re under the age of 12 you can only operate a snowmobile on your own private property. ” Ages 12-16 you can start to operate it by yourself if you are in the company of an adult or have your snowmobile card and we recognize other state certification as well. “
The Sheriff’s Office has their own snowmobile they use to patrol Keuning added and they look to make sure you are operating your snowmobile safely and legally. ” You know do you have your helmet on, is your snowmobile registered, and the same thing with boats/ORV with the alcohol limit. The limit is a .08 just like operating a boat and ORV. it’s all on the same page now. You can be arrested for operating a snowmobile while intoxicated. If you license is suspended or revoked, you cannot operate a snowmobile either.”
