HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Wings of Mercy provides transportation to distant medical facilities for patients who cannot afford to fly.
They have helped many in Ottawa County who are forever grateful to the organization. Serious or rare illnesses are not always treatable at local or even regional medical centers. Sometimes the best or only treatment can be hundreds of miles away.
Their annual CareAffaire event raises money for the organization. All pilots are volunteers says Managing Director Grace Spelde.
“These events have raised money for fuel. So our pilots donate their planes, their time and everything that is involved, which is huge. We help them by reimbursing them for fuel costs. So community events like this help raise money for people right here in this community.” Spelde says.
Saturday, August 27, the 2016 Holland CareAffaire will be held at Tulip City Air Service at the West Michigan Regional Airport in Holland located at 15815 South Washington.
The day starts out with a Runway 5k, pancake breakfast and free flights for kids 8-17. There will be vintage airplanes, a classic car show, helicopter and airplane rides for an additional donation. The event runs from 8-12 p.m. Admission is $6 per person or $25 for a family of up to 6 people.
