WEST OLIVE, MI (WHTC) – As Steve Kempker gets ready to become Ottawa County’s next Sheriff, his replacement as Undersheriff has emerged.
Captain Valerie Weiss was named by Kempker to succeed him as the county’s #2 cop. A 21-year veteran of the department in various duties, including road patrol, community policing, a Command Officer and a member of the Sheriff’s Office Executive Team, she has been at her current rank since 2014.
Kempker said in a statement that, “Captain Weiss is dedicated and has in-depth knowledge of the law enforcement profession, job skills, day-to-day operations, long-range goals and planning. She is proactive in our communities and all aspects of the services provided to Ottawa County, and I have full confidence in Captain Weiss’ abilities to fulfill the duties of Undersheriff.”
Kempker succeded Greg Steigenga as Undersheriff nearly 20 months ago and is running unopposed in the November 8th General Election to replace the retiring Gary Rosema as Sheriff. Weiss will be working with both Kempker and Rosema in a transition period before assuming her new duties in January.
