GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC) – One child was hospitalized and five others were treated for bumps and bruises as a blowout caused a rollover crash south of Jenison on Saturday night.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Christie Wendt, 51-year-old Nancy Nino of Grand Rapids was driving a Ford Escape at full speed eastbound on I-196 near the 8th Avenue overpass when her front right tire blew out. It caused the vehicle to veer into the median and it rolled over several times.
A 10-year-old boy, riding unrestrained in the bag cargo area, suffered a leg injury that necessitated him being taken to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital for treatment. Five other youths, aged 10 to 12, were treated for minor ailments and released at the scene, while Nino and another adult, a 37-year-old Grand Rapids woman, riding in the front seats, were buckled up and sought their own treatment for their minor hurts.
Nino was ticked for a child restraint violation as the crash remains under investigation.
