HOLLAND (WHTC) — Holland native Raul Garcia wants to help the neighborhood where he grew up and still lives. Garcia, now married with children of his own, says he wants to see the community thrive.
The June bicycle fundraiser is organized as a joint project of Restoring Our Cities-Michigan and Great Lakes Urban.
Garcia’s ride is an extension of his job as program director for Westcore neighbors, Westcore’s boundaries are 14th to 22nd streets and River to Ottawa Avenues. The neighborhood includes Washington Square, the Boys & Girls Club and Vanderbilt Charter Academy and is adjacent to Kollen park and the city’s aquatic center.
Many of the residents have lived in the neighborhood for decades and want to see it flourish, Garcia said, describing the people as economically, culturally and racially diverse.
Garcia hopes to raise $1,000 for the ride with an online campaign. Donations will be used to help Westcore programs and activities, he said.
