SPRING LAKE, MI (WHTC) – Three children are in serious condition following a one-car crash Sarutday inb Spring Lake Townbship. The children whose names are being withheld, are ages 4, 8 and 10 and were seated in the backseat of the vehicle.
According to Sgt. Jay Douglas of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, the driver, a 36-year-old man from Spring Lake was southbound near the 1700 block of North Shores Estates driving as a high rate of speed in a 1997 Nissan. He tried to negotiate a turn in the road and lost control. The driver whose name is being withheld pending arraignment, then ran off the roadway, clipped a wooden pole which forced the vehicle into the air where it struck a large retaining wall.
After striking the retaining wall, the vehicle then crossed back over North Shores Estates road where it came to rest on the north side of the road on a dune. As a result of the crash the vehicle caught fire.
When first respondents arrived on the scene, everyone was out of the vehicle and had no additional injuries from the fire. Aeromed was called to the scene to transport one of the children to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. The other two children were transported there via ambulances.
The driver was taken to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, where he was treated and released before being lodged in the Ottawa County jail on charges related to this crash.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.
