ROBINSON TWP, MI (WHTC) – Robinson Township Fire Chief Paul VanVelzen says a wood burning stove in Ottawa County may have caused a house fire.
It broke out around 8:20 p.m. Monday night on 144th Avenue just south of Lincoln Street. VanVelzen says there was one accupant in the house at the time of the fire.
According Fire Chief VanVelzen, the woman had gone out into the garage to put some wood in the wood stove that was keeping their dogs warm. The woodstove got the back wall on fire and the fire quickly spread to the home.
The woman made it out safely and her two children 4 and 5 years old were with their Grandma at the time. Her husband is in Mexico working.
The fire caused heavy damage and firefighters estimate a 70% loss.
Red Cross has stepped in to help the family.
