GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – The Ottawa County Circuit Court has scheduled the start of jury selection for the trials of two men later this summer.
August 25th begins the misdemeanor fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct trial of former West Ottawa High School teacher and varsity wrestling coach Matthew Powell. The 34-year-old instructor allegedly had “inappropriate” contact with a 16-year-old female student three different times earlier this year, and he was fired by the district earlier this month. Powell could face up to two years in prison if convicted.
September 3rd begins the attempted murder and habitual offender trial of Lorice Lee Young. The 27-year-old Holland man allegedly stabbed a 24-year-old South Haven man six times during an altercation last November at a James Gate Court residence on Holland’s North Side. The victim did recover and testified at Young’s preliminary hearing. Young remains held on 250 thousand dollars bond.
