GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC) – There are three cases of canine influenza now confirmed in Michigan, with two of those in Kent County and the other in Macomb County near Metro Detroit.
Flu for dogs is similiar to to how the virus affects people. It usually takes dogs three weeks to recover, and symptoms include coughing, discharge from the nose, and vomiting.
It’s a bug that originated in Asia. No one knows how it got here, but thousands of dogs in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana have already contracted it.
Dog flu was first found in the U.S. in 2004, but the strain that’s being found now is new.
Veterinarian’s say to keep your dog at home if it is sick, and if symptoms are severe, get the dog to the vet as soon as possible.
