GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WHTC) – Court filings and rulings involving the Lakeshore have come out of the US District Courthouse in Grand Rapids.
In documents filed there, musicians Christopher Waechter and Gabriel Novak will be allowed to perform on the streets of Saugatuck this spring and summer. The proposed consent agreement settles a federal lawsuit the entertainers had filed, claiming that the city violated their constitutional free speech rights. It would prevent Saugatuck from enforcing an ordinance banning performers from public sidewalks and prohibits requiring permits for such performances.
Meanwhile, US District Court Judge Robert Jonker will allow current and former workers at the Grand King Buffet until May 22nd to join a lawsuit claiming that employees at the West 24th Street eatery in Holland were underpaid. Marvin Osorto heads the group alleging that they worked 65 to 75 hours a week at a flat rate of between 400 and 600 dollars, with no overtime and no payroll records kept. The restaurant has filed a court rebuttal denying any violation of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
