GRAND HAVEN, MI (WHTC) – “Operation Thaw Out “, begins today at 10 a.m. with the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Grand Haven. Officials will conduct ice rescue training today. While no one is allowed inside the stations gate, the public is invited to stand on the boardwalk in front of the U.S. Army Corp building to watch.
The training will involve rescue crews from Grand Haven and Traverse City stations. Several demonstrations will be shown such as a simulation of a fisherman who has fallen through the ice while the crews highlight the dangers of thin ice.
The Coast Guard’s 9th District which includes the Lake Michigan region, has 39 stations, two air stations, and eight cutters designated, trained and equipped for ice rescue operations.
