GEORGETOWN TWP., MI (WHTC) – A two-vehicle crash hospitalized three persons between Hudsonville and Allendale on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jeff Steigenga, an unnamed six-year-old boy climbed behind the wheel of a parked van in the driveway of a residence off of Baldwin Street near Bass Creek Drive, west of 42nd Avenue. He was able to shift the vehicle into neutral, and the van started backing up into the roadway. A westbound vehicle, driven by 43-year-old Amy Phelps of Hudsonville, couldn’t avoid a collision, and the van then struck the child’s 16-year-old sister, who had run out of the house trying to stop the drifting vehicle.
The boy and his sister were taken to DeVos Children’s Hospital for treatment. Phelps wasn’t hurt, but her 15-year-old daughter, who was a passenger in her vehicle, was also injured and taken to Spectrum-Zeeland Community Hospital in stable condition. The crash remains under investigation.
