BANGOR, MI (WHTC) – A Bangor man’s car was clipped by a train in Van Buren County yesterday afternoon and is being cited for careless driving. 59 year-old John Serdel told the police that he was attempting to remove a bank card from his wallet while approaching a train crossing at West Monroe Street in Bangor. Serdel did not notice that the rail road crossing lights were flashing red until it was too late to stop. The driver tried to accelerate to avoid collision with the train approaching, but was not fast enough. The train hit the rear driver’s side, causing the vehicle to rotate and be thrown out of the path of the train. The train received no damage but Serdel’s car was towed away at the scene. According the Van Buren Sheriff’s office, Serdel was issued a careless driving citation and sustained no injuries.
