HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – With so many ways to celebrate Park Township’s centennial anniversary this past week, it’s hard to believe that the festivities are not over yet! During the week, Hollanders were able to enjoy street parties and book signings on top of learning about Park Township’s history.
Part of the celebration that took place this week included commemorating Park Township’s Ottawa Indian heritage, specifically the small tribe of Chief Waukazoo that resided on Lake Macatawa. The Waukazoo Indian Homecoming, just one of the many facets of the Park Township Centennial Celebration, started Tuesday at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds with do-it-yourself crafts.
Between Tuesday and Thursday, visitors were able to learn about basket making, fire keepers, flint knapping, and other Waukazoo traditions. A free community dinner was held on Friday, with items such as corn soup and wild game on the menu.
This Sunday, August 22 is the closing ceremonies of the Park Township Centennial Celebration. Dancers and music will entertain the crowd and an announcer will explain the meaning behind customary powwows. Grand entry starts at noon at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds.
