HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – More than 8,000 children are living in poverty in Ottawa County and in Holland Public Schools alone, 400 families are homeless and 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Kid’s Food Basket, a nonprofit based in Grand Rapids, is expanding its mission to two Ottawa County elementary schools on May 4th. Over 600 students will be served this spring at Holland Heights and Woodside Elementary school.
Bridget Clark Whitney, executive director says school principles have seen an increase in state standardized test scores since the organization started 13 years ago.
The organization delivers meals only during the school week and funding comes from foundations, corporations and individual donors.
