New minimum wage now in effect across Michigan

LANSING, MI (WTVB) - Labor Day 2014 has come and gone, giving minimum wage earners something real to celebrate.  Their pay has now increased 75-cents an hour to $8.15 an hour, effective yesterday.   It was approved by the state legislature as the first step in a gradual increase in the minimum which will peak at $9.25 an hour on January 1, 2018. It’s lower than the $10.10 minimum proposed by President Obama and by a group that had sought to put a hike on the Michigan ballot this fall.

The Republican leadership in the Michigan legislature responded by proposing the lower minimum as an alternative. Many economists say it still does not constitute a true living wage, but it’s closer, especially for families. The former minimum wage of $7.40 per hour had been in place since 2009.
