DETROIT (WKZO) -- The Detroit Institute of Arts has filed a response to creditors with U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes.

DIA officials filed a response Wednesday to creditors who have argued that selling pieces from the museum's collection is necessary to help the city emerge from bankruptcy. The 30-page legal filing says officials argue the city is prohibited by its own laws and the 1885 state charter creating the museum from using DIA property for anything other than art purposes.

DIA officials also noted that any attempt to sell art, especially works that were donated and not bought with city money, would likely result in lawsuits against the city.
